Yesterday I had an experience that got me thinking

Yesterday I had an experience that got me thinking. I was driving, and my gas gauge turned yellow, meaning it was time to refuel. I thought to myself, “I’ll get gas on my way back.”

So, on my way home, I stopped at the gas station, ready to fill up. I reached for my wallet and—ouch—I realized I had left it at home. There I was, standing by the pump with no way to pay.

What could I do? Nothing. So I silently prayed, asking God to help me make it back home. As I drove past several gas stations on my way, unable to refuel, I kept praying. And by God’s grace, I made it back home safely, even though the gauge was still on yellow.

In moments of desperation, we often remember God. We pray, we sing, and we cry out for His help. Just like I did when my gas gauge was on yellow—I prayed hard, even humming songs about His provision, trusting Him to get me home safely. And He did.

But let’s ask ourselves: what happens after the prayer is answered? Do we still call on Him with the same urgency when the tank is full and life feels smooth? Or do we forget Him until the next crisis hits?

God isn’t just the One who shows up in our moments of need. His provision is constant, His presence never wavers. Yet, so often, we treat Him like a spare tire—only remembered when something breaks. But what if we flipped the script? What if we sought Him daily, in gratitude, not just in desperation? What if we sang songs of thanksgiving when things are good, not just when we’re struggling?

Don’t wait until the next yellow light in your life to seek Him. Make Him your first call every day, not just your emergency backup.

Reflection: What would your relationship with God look like if you sought Him daily, not just in emergencies?
