The Biggest Reason We Don’t See God at Work
The Israelites longed for the Messiah, expecting a mighty warrior who would overthrow their enemies with power and spectacle. But when Jesus came, He wasn’t what they envisioned. Born in a manger, raised as a carpenter’s son, and walking among the common people—He didn’t fit the dramatic image they had in mind.
Many couldn’t recognize Him because He didn’t arrive with thunder and lightning. Yet, in His simplicity, He was performing the greatest miracle of all—bringing salvation to mankind.
A lot of times, we don’t see or hear God because we expect Him to come with drama—thunder, fire, or a booming voice from the sky. But more often than not, God speaks in the ordinary. He moves through the everyday things we overlook—a gentle nudge in our hearts, a scripture that pops up at the right time, a friend’s encouraging words, or even a simple sunrise.
Elijah learned this lesson firsthand. He expected God in the powerful wind, the earthquake, and the fire, but God wasn’t in any of those. Instead, He spoke in a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12).
Reflection: What everyday moments have you overlooked where God might have been speaking? Take a moment today to slow down and listen.
