Lessons from the past

There’s this story in 1 Samuel where a young David, standing before King Saul, boldly declares, “Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them” (1 Samuel 17:36). David wasn’t boasting—he was drawing on his past experiences to fuel his faith. Every encounter he’d had, every danger he’d faced, had prepared him for this moment with Goliath.

David’s triumphs over the lion and the bear weren’t just victories; they were training grounds. God used those battles to strengthen David’s courage, skill, and trust in Him.

Sometimes we overlook the significance of our past experiences. We go through seasons that feel ordinary or even challenging, not realizing they’re equipping us for greater things. The resilience, patience, and faith built in those moments serve as preparation for the “Goliaths” we’ll face in the future.

There’s wisdom in looking back—not to dwell, but to see how God has been preparing us all along. What seemed like simple struggles or setbacks were actually stepping stones.

Reflection: How has God used your past experiences to build your faith for the present?

Verse of the Day: 1 Samuel 17:37. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.
