Is this a red flag?

One of my friends recently replaced his old phone. The screen had been giving him issues for months. Whenever we talked, he’d tell me he could hear me but couldn’t see me because of the broken display. Finally, he upgraded to the latest model in the brand—a huge step up.

Out of curiosity, I asked him how he was liking his new phone and if he was enjoying it. Guess what he said? “I miss my old phone.”

I was stunned. I thought, Who misses a broken phone? Usually, people are excited about upgrading to something new, whether it’s a phone, a car, or any other item. But here he was, longing for the old one.

As I thought about this, it reminded me of how often we hold on to the “old” in our lives, even when God is doing something new. Just like my friend missing his old phone, we can sometimes find ourselves longing for the familiarity of the past, even when the future God has prepared for us is far better.

The Israelites had the same struggle. Instead of celebrating their freedom and trusting God’s promise of a land flowing with milk and honey, they found themselves longing for the meat they ate as slaves in Egypt. They were so focused on what they left behind that they missed the incredible blessings ahead.

Reflection: What “old phone” are you still clinging to? What former things are you holding onto that could be keeping you from experiencing the new blessings God has for you?

Verse of the Day:  Isaiah 43:18-19. Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
